Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a clamor for introducing additional classifications to recognize unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games globally continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
