Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
