2K Recruits Apex Legends Developer to Rescue Troubled Hero Shooter Ambitious Title

2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Transition Comes After Lukewarm Feedback

The new appointee takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing early showing last autumn.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed staff about this strategic move through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a clearer direction.

The president noted that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a revised approach, aiming to address player expectations.

Trend of Strategic Recruitment

The news echoes a comparable move taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock development group.

Here is the complete content from the president's memo:

Dear Team—

I know you all just finished your meeting - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented developers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re excited for that relationship to endure.”

Through your commitment and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last fall’s the game testing phase was revealing. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It revealed the requirement for a clearer identity.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the input to heart and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s positioned to achieve its ambition to our players.

The belief in this project increases every day. To boost the outstanding advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome the new hire as the new Studio Head of 31st Union. After a period of conversations, Ben officially joins us on the specified date.

Ben’s guidance and experience in the PVP shooter space is considerable, having spent the past decade and a half creating and managing some of the most well-known franchises in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in greeting Ben next week. We are all excited to keep witnessing the development of Project ETHOS in the weeks to come.

David

Background of the New Leader

The appointee presently serves in the position of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He previously worked at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, prior to that, had stints at other industry leaders.

Title Information and Concept

Project Ethos was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. Initially, 31st Union described the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the genre."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch states. "Challenge the competition with unique powers, stakes, and tests that change every session. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Alternatively go big, risk it all, and hope your team can earn top ranking? The option is yours."

The game has not yet received an official debut schedule or consoles, but fans can anticipate more updates as development advances.
